North
Hollywood, California. That's the day and place that Conjure was first conceived
by acclaimed illustrator Matt
Busch. Arriving in sunny Southern California with model Sarah Wilkinson just hours after being in Michigan's winter wonderland on Christmas Day, the two were awestruck at the place they were staying. Busch and Wilkinson's visit to Los Angeles would be almost a month long, and much of that time they'd be staying with Busch's manager, Erica Koltonow. "We knew we'd be staying in a castle," comments Busch, "but we had no idea how cool it was going to be. The place is authentic, but looks straight out of Tim Burton's imagination. Once we saw it, we knew we would be filming there." With half the movie taking place in the tropical location, the other half takes place in Busch's real-life home and studio just outside Detroit, Michigan. Filming in Detroit began in February 2004, and principal photography on Conjure wrapped in April. In addition to location filming in Busch's home, all of the special effects shots also took place in his multi-media studio, what he refers to as 'Planetmatt Headquarters.' "I have a full set studio areas built right into the home, and can work on everything right there. It's my mini-version of 'Skywalker Ranch,'" The home studio complex is complete with a large art studio, photo set space, digital editing suite, recording studio, marketing office, and even a presentation theatre with movie screen. |

Also,
Shawn Sheehan at Shnickerdoodle Studios (Warren, Michigan) dove
head-first into some of the more complex digital effects.
Commented Busch, "It's all editing from here on out. This is the
part I'm enjoying the most, to really try to craft the pacing and use
creative storytelling techniques to bring Conjure to life." Busch admits, "I'm usually all about the formal movie-making process, but Conjure was pretty unconventional. Most of the script was written in a hotel room in Culver City, California, and by the time the script was completed, half the movie was already filmed." "Digital technology really helps this non-linear way of movie-making. We were extremely limited with time and budget, but this is the best movie we could have made with what we had. It's the biggest ambition I've ever taken on and I'm extremely proud of it. I guarantee it will give you the willies." *UPDATE*
