K-Idanian: What made you want to get
involved in Star Wars?
Matt-Busc: I saw the film when I was four.
I knew right away!
Matt-Busc: I was always interested in the
ART side of it early on...
Matt-Busc: Obviously the rich visuals from
the film, but I was also a comic book fan, and I loved the STAR
WARS Marvel comics, growing up.
Matt-Busc: So, it's always been a dream,
almost since I can remember.
K-Idanian: Why did you want to become
an artist?
K-Idanian: Matt, if I happen to cut
you off, my deepest apologizes
Matt-Busc: It was actually STAR
WARS that started that. (No prob!)
Matt-Busc: There's a story in the BIO section
of my web site that talks about my first attempt at depicting the
'Galaxy far, far away...
Matt-Busc: I created a STAR WARS pop-up-book
in Kindergarten... Funny story, though for anyone who's interested.

Matt-Busc: So at school, when the Scholastic
Newspaper thing came to class, announcing that a STAR WARS pop-up-book
was being released, I was extremely excited!
Matt-Busc: So I ran home and told my Mom
about it...
Matt-Busc: But she refused to order it for me since I never read
any of the other books she ordered for me.
Matt-Busc: I was extremely upset.
Matt-Busc: So I marched right up to my room...
Matt-Busc: Pulled out the construction paper...
Matt-Busc: Pulled out the magic markers...
Matt-Busc: And set out to create my own STAR WARS Pop-Up-Book!
Matt-Busc: For a little kid, it was quite impressive!
Matt-Busc: My Mom was so impressed, that she secretly ordered the
REAL book for me.
Matt-Busc: So I remember sitting in class the day that the book
orders were delivered.
Matt-Busc: And I knew that all the other kids were getting the book.
Matt-Busc: So as the teacher is calling off student's names to come
get there books, I was quietly sitting with my head under my desk,
reading my own self-created pop-up-book...
Matt-Busc: Trying not to pay attention to the other kids' excitement...
Matt-Busc: So you can imagine my surprise when the teacher called
my name to come get my book!!!
Matt-Busc: So that was really my first lesson in life with this
whole business:
Matt-Busc: If you want something bad enough, and you put forth the
effort...
Matt-Busc: Your dreams will come
true!

Star Wars?
Matt-Busc: Well, there have been other
instances where that same theory has paid off...
Matt-Busc: I first saw STAR WARS at the Showcase Cinema in Sterling
Heights, MI.
Matt-Busc: It was funny, though, because my parents saw it first,
and decided it was too violent for me... With Tusken Raiders killing
Luke's Aunt and Uncle, and Obi-Wan getting sliced in half and all!
Matt-Busc: So I actually tricked my Grandparents into taking me
to see it for the first time!

Matt-Busc: I've only done 1 FARSCAPE piece,
and it's somewhere in the GALLERY section...
Matt-Busc: I did that piece for the official licensee, but then
they lost the license.
Matt-Busc: There was talk of me doing the comics, but that fizzled
later on...
Matt-Busc: I actually just recived notice that I'll be doing covers
for a few Sci-Fi properties in the coming months:

enjoy a lot of the obscure stuff.
Matt-Busc: The one property I am not really a fan of, though is
STAR TREK. It's not that I don't like it, I just am not familiar
with any of the shows...

all of the other stuff is based... The films that fill my mind with
wonder.

of RPG...started playing back in ~1980 (D&D)

I'd like to ask what techique he uses... it looks mostly like airbrush,
but i've seen the same effects created by other methods. (even guache)
Matt-Busc: Well, for a complete outlined
look at my technique, check out the STEP BY STEP section of my web
site...
Matt-Busc: I start out with penciling in a drawing, like most artists
do.
Matt-Busc: From there I begin to paint in acrylic blacks to seperate
my darkest darks...
Matt-Busc: I then paint in acrylic washes. At this point it looks
like watercolor.
Matt-Busc: I then do acrylic airbrushing, but believe it or not,
this part is minimal.
Matt-Busc: I use airbrush for large areas of smooth color, or special
effects (like a lightsabre glow).
Matt-Busc: I then paint again on top of that, mostly opaque acrylics
to really pull out the lights against the shadows.
Matt-Busc: My last step is to use color pencils. This completes
any details I didn't get with the paint, but also lets me add some
flare to give it that Drew Struzan look.
Matt-Busc: After all, he really has defined the look for STAR WARS
art.
Matt-Busc: And when I started, I was getting hired because I could
replicate his style.

kind of thing...
Matt-Busc: I originally did the art for
the credits page of one of West End Games' STAR WARS Adventure Journals.

book together, Editor Peter Schweighofer had brought the art to
the Bantam offices, jst to show it off or whatever... Bantam liked
it so much, they wanted to use it for the cover!
Matt-Busc: So I got paid twice for the
same art!
Matt-Busc: I would love to do more covers, but now that Del Rey
has the license (and they love my work, too) but they are choosing
to do the whole photo-illustration thing.
Matt-Busc: I dig that stuff, but in my opinion, it doesn't look
very "STAR WARS".

Matt-Busc: I think the key to a lot of my success has been determination.

Matt-Busc: The fact that 'giving up' is not in my vocabulary.
Matt-Busc: (Well, I guess it is since I just said it!)

artsit, because you are constantly promoting yourself, and it almost
seems like it's an ego thing.
Matt-Busc: But you have to get your name out there and show off
your work.

Matt-Busc: I know that a lot of the other artists out there doing
official stuff like me, started off as Indy STAR WARS artists, doing
work for fanzines and all...
Matt-Busc: And I know that LFL has personally tapped writers and
artists that have run fan things online to do the official stuff.
